Book Release -† ìWarren County, New York -- Itsí People and Their History Over Timeî
The Warren County Historical Societyís most recent publication, ìWarren County, New York -- Itsí People and Their History Over Time,î has been released and is now available for purchase (October 2009).
From tanneries to tourists, this book outlines the development of early industries, the hardiness of the Adirondack spirit, as well as modern life in these woods. Early 19th century industries in Warren County evolved along waterways and were related to trapping, tanning and logging. With travel becoming easier by the beginning of the 20th century, and interest in the wilderness growing, hotels sprang up on the lakes, attracting those who wished to leave the cities for the coolness and beauty of the North country. As time passed, the Northway became a necessity, and its construction carved a path parallel to the Hudson. Now many came North not only to enjoy swimming and boating in the summer, but skiing and sledding in the winter. The very success of the region has also had its critics, and land management became a reality in the 1960ís with the formation of the Adirondack Park Agency. From early settlers to modern families, all have come to this region for a common reason -- itsí beauty, recreational opportunities and opportunity.
With 16 chapters and 92 photos and drawings, this hardcover book is a must have for those who are interested in the history of Warren County, or for those who want to catch a glimpse of what life was like here in the past.
The book can be purchased from the Warren County Historical Society, 195 Sunnyside Rd., Queensbury, NY, or call (518-743-0734).
